WindowLympics training for Best Sash Competitions

The Intro to Sash Making Workshop is a five-day immersion into the art and structure of sash joinery—taught entirely with mobile tools and field-based techniques. You’ll learn how to build functional, historically accurate sash from raw material using traditional joinery methods adapted for modern efficiency.

Whether you're a beginner or a carpenter seeking to sharpen your skills, this course will give you a strong grasp of the principles that power the Window Craft movement—one mortise and tenon at a time.

What You’ll Learn:

Day 1: Millwork & Mortise-and-Tenon Basics

Create a screen frame using square-cut bridal joints to master layout, shoulder lines, and clean joinery.

Day 2: Storm Window Joinery

Add offset tenons and glazing rabbets. Learn how joinery must shift when accommodating glass and sash profile details.

Day 3: Casement Sash Making

Build a fully functional casement sash. Learn how to shape meeting joints, control for warp, and route accurate profiles.

Day 4: Double Hung Sash – Top & Bottom

Construct a matched pair of double-hung sash and understand the mechanical relationship between top and bottom rails.

Day 5: Divided Lite Joinery

Integrate muntin bars and build a full 6-lite double-hung sash—where your understanding of layout, joinery, and sequencing is fully tested.

Who It’s For:

  • Carpenters and woodworkers interested in historic joinery

  • Beginners who want to learn traditional skills the right way

  • Window restorers looking to expand into fabrication

  • Anyone seeking a trade they can own, master, and carry with them
