Intro to Window Craft is a five-day, hands-on Foundation Field Lab that teaches participants to understand and restore a historic wood window as one complete working system.
October 31 - November 4, 2026
Uvalde Foundation House
Uvalde, Texas$2,000 per participant
Unlike Intro to Sash Making, which begins with raw material and works outward toward a finished sash, Intro to Window Craft begins with an existing aged window and works inward. Participants learn how the sash, frame, mechanics, glazing, finish and surrounding opening relate to one another—and how to bring the entire window back into service.
The project house is an ordinary historic house by design. It represents the kind of building found in communities everywhere and gives participants a practical place to master the fundamentals before applying the same system to more demanding work, including the Uvalde Grand Opera House.
Under the leadership of Scott Whobrey, with Duncan Brown contributing in finishing, participants will learn how to:
• Read an existing window as a complete system
• Safely disassemble and document the opening
• Restore ropes, pulleys, weights and other mechanics
• Evaluate and repair sash and frame components
• Prepare, glaze, prime and finish historic woodwork
• Reassemble, fit and tune the completed window
• Sequence the work using the Five Pillars of Window Craft
• Carry the process into future projects and communities
